Congratulations!
You're ready to
It's time to put your own well-being first.
What happens now?
The 21 Days of Change, that's what. Your personal journey.
You're ready!
You have the chance to make a big difference in the clutter you see and the clutter you don't see.
Do you see any of this?
stacks of papers, newspapers, mail, magazines
laundry, clean, dirty, folded, not folded, everywhere
dishes you use every day, on the counter, on the table, in places far from the kitchen
ornaments, doo dads, gadgets, stuff that doesn't have a name
kids' art
books
furniture that gets in the way and is just a place to hold clutter
boxes you haven't opened in so long you forget what's in them
arts and crafts supplies you haven't touched in a while
and so on.
Clutter can be anything. If it doesn't bother you, it doesn't matter.
If it does bother you, and there is no other explanation, it's clutter.
Clutter is created by the object + your response to it
You may not mind the clutter but
it's making you feel guilty, ashamed, or embarrassed because you know your home is not the way you want it
it's getting hard to find things
moving around is difficult because of the stuff in the way
you're missing important dates because you lose the bill, the invitation, the reminder, the form
your home does not smell fresh and clean
people make comments
you feel stressed
you feel like you are stuck, paralysed, helpless
just thinking about the clutter makes you feel weak or negative.
Looking at all this, you can see that clutter can be different for different people. One person is irritated because they keep losing stuff. Another feels defeated because they just can't seem to make a dent in the piles of stuff.
So, what can change in 21 days?
A lot.
The most powerful way to deal with clutter is to make peace with it. That doesn't mean doing nothing.
Making peace with clutter starts with understanding the feelings that are getting in the way.
What feelings? What do feelings have to do with it?
Here's an easy way for you to answer that question. Sit down in a quiet place for 10 minutes.
Close your eyes and mentally picture yourself decluttering. Watch it like you would watch a movie.
This is the reality version, not the ideal version. Look at yourself doing what you actually do, not what you wish to do.
You see yourself walking to the space you'll be working on.
You see yourself starting.
You see yourself decluttering.
And then … you see yourself stopping.
ZOOM IN!
What happened?
THAT is where feelings come in.
Maybe you got
bored
anxious
sad
indecisive
excited and wanted to do it all at once
frustrated because you couldn't do what you wanted
tired
sore
stuffed up and sneezing
embarrassed
guilty
ashamed
weighed down
impatient
or some other feelings.
Does EVERYTHING come down to feelings?
No. Feelings are a huge part of why decluttering can be a challenge.
The other big reason is logistics. You don't have the knowledge or the muscle to get the job done.
But … I would like to point out that logistics is a problem you can solve. Feelings may be the reason you haven't solved the logistics problems.
There are fairly easy solutions.
Don't know how to dispose of something responsibly?
That is a research question.
Don't have the muscle power to move something?
That is a resources question.
So, if you stop at the point where you hear yourself saying, "I can't declutter because I don't know where to take this object," ask the next question. "How can I find out?"
For resources questions, ask, "How can I get the help I need?".
Dig deeper and ask,
"Why am I NOT doing the research?"
"Why am I NOT getting the help?".
Often, feelings will show up. For example, many of us are embarrassed to ask for help, whether it's help with research or help with muscles and resources. Deal with the embarrassment and you can deal with the clutter.
OK, let's get back to the nuts and bolts of the 21 Days of Change.
